JPMorgan Chase Requires Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Main Office Access

The banking leader has informed staff members moving into its new headquarters in NYC that they have to provide their biometric data to gain entry the high-value structure.

Change from Optional to Required

The banking corporation had previously intended for the collection of employee biometrics at its Manhattan skyscraper to be optional.

Nevertheless, staff of the US's largest bank who have begun work at the corporate hub since last month have received emails stating that physical scan entry was now "mandatory".

The Technology Behind Entry

Biometric access necessitates staff to submit their eye patterns to pass through entry points in the lobby instead of using their access passes.

Headquarters Details

The bank's headquarters, which reportedly required an investment of $3bn to construct, will eventually serve as a workplace for ten thousand employees once it is fully occupied later this year.

Safety Justification

JP Morgan opted not to respond but it is assumed that the use of biological markers for admission is designed to make the premises better protected.

Alternative Access Methods

There are exemptions for some employees who will still be able to use a badge for entry, although the standards for who will utilize more conventional entry methods remains unspecified.

Supporting Mobile Applications

Complementing the implementation of palm and eye scanners, the organization has also released the "JPMC Work" mobile app, which acts as a electronic pass and hub for staff resources.

The platform enables employees to handle visitor access, use indoor maps of the facility and arrange in advance food from the building's nineteen restaurant options.

Security Context

The introduction of enhanced security measures comes as American companies, especially those with major presence in the city, look to enhance safety following the shooting of the CEO of one of the leading healthcare providers in July.

The executive, the boss of the insurance giant, was killed in the incident not far from the bank's location.

Future Expansion Possibilities

It is uncertain if the banking institution aims to deploy physical identifier entry for employees at its offices in other key banking hubs, such as the British financial district.

Employee Tracking Developments

The decision comes during discussion over the use of digital tools to monitor employees by their employers, including monitoring workplace presence.

Earlier this year, all JP Morgan workers on flexible arrangements were directed they must return to the physical location full-time.

Executive Perspective

The company's leader, the financial executive, has characterized JP Morgan's recently opened tower as a "beautiful physical manifestation" of the company.

The executive, one of the world's most powerful bankers, lately cautioned that the chance of the financial markets crashing was significantly higher than many market participants thought.
